Shōsuke Kaneko’s “When The Rain Falls”

Movie review by Dennis D. McDonald

A young woman working in a small Japanese publishing company falls in love with the wife of the publisher. He’s a lecher and portrayed as “an older man.” His younger wife is eager to have a child.

That’s when the wife and the even younger co-worker initiate a love affair illustrated with much nudity and lovemaking. It’s all pretty soap-opera-ish but the acting and photography are excellent, even if in some cases the film might be considered relatively explicit soft-core porn.

One annoying aspect of the movie is the annoying light jazz soundtrack music. The director has apparently decided not to emotionally or action-wise relate the music to what we’re seeing on screen, most noticeably in the semi-explicit sex scenes. I don’t know if that is typical for this director, whose background includes both “Death Note” and Japanese “kaiju” films. It’s a real puzzle but is clearly intentional.
