Derrick Borte’s “The Get Out”

Derrick Borte’s “The Get Out”

Movie review by Dennis D. McDonaldrts

The story might be full of crime movie clichés but several things raise THE GET OUT above the competition:

  • Russell Crowe delivers a solid and commanding performance as a shady nightclub owner trying to escape his dependence on the mob.

  • A twist: years ago Russian mobsters were all the rage in crime movies. In THE GET OUT the “hero” is an Albanian being harassed by Hispanic gang members.

  • In THE GET OUT the Feds end up being the (sort of) “good guys.”

  • The story might be filled with clichés but there are enough twists and turns to keep things entertaining.

  • Each character has enough screen time and acting chops to make the character different and recognizable. This is true across the board.

  • It’s fun seeing Aaron Paul play an “academic.”

  • The film had me fooled into thinking it was actually filmed in LA.

So, there’s nothing radically original here, but it’s a fun watch if you’re in the mood for a mystery/thriller with some fun twists and, of course, Russell Crowe (and his “Albanian” accent) are a treat to watch!
