Ng Yuen-fai’s “Warriors of Future”
Movie Review by Dennis D. McDonald
I enjoyed this movie. It may suffer from the same lack of originality and overblown production that characterize other Chinese sci-fi epics, but the 12-year-old in me responded enthusiastically to the gadgets, creatures, stock characters, flashy vehicles, and familiar plotlines—much as I once reacted to Honda’s The Mysterians when I was a kid.
One clear strength is the film’s relentless pace and rapid editing. Things change so quickly that a seasoned viewer barely has time to think, “That’s ridiculous!” before being swept into the next explosion, stunt, chase, car crash, monster attack, or plane crash.
There are just enough senior figures stationed in a crowded command center—staring at screens, uttering serious lines, and looking gravely concerned—to briefly temper the breakneck action. But once that pause ends, it’s right back into another crash-bang spectacle.
My biggest disappointment? Where were all the robots we were promised at the beginning? Lost on the cutting room floor? Or lost to the budget?
