SCIENCE article: "Data Sharing for Pediatric Cancer"
The article Data Sharing for Pediatric Cancer in the March 15 issue of Science (Vol. 363, Issue 6432, pp. 1125) is a brief but intelligent discussion of how to go about sharing genomic data on young patients with cancer. The frequency of such cancers is rare so no one cancer center will see many patients of a particular type of childhood cancer.
The article extolls not only the potential benefits of data sharing but also outlines some of the steps being taken to encourage and facilitate such data sharing. These methods include requiring research grant recipients to share detailed research findings and data.
As with all such data sharing efforts the success or failure will be determined not only by the actual benefits of such sharing on research and treatment but also on the manner in which the sharing program is funded, governed, and managed. See below for more articles related to this topic.
