Book review by Dennis D. McDonald

My 4 year old granddaughter was fascinated by this book. We read chapters repeatedly to her. She has not had a lot of exposure to mythology and this is a terrific introduction to some of the most famous stories including Perseus and Medusa (her favorite), the Trojan Horse, and Odysseus’ adventures.

Text is sophisticated but age appropriate. Illustrations are dramatic. The overall design of the hardback (borrowed from the public library for our Midwestern vacation trip) is superb and of the highest quality.

This is the kind of book we would have read to our daughter when she was little. The stories are exciting and timeless, the illustrations imaginative and colorful, and best of all, women like Athena are portrayed as powerful troublemakers.

Now when we ask our granddaughter when she grows up whether she wants to be a “princess” or a “goddess,” she answers “goddess” — just like her mother!
