Stephen King's "LATER"

Stephen King's "LATER"

A book review by Dennis D. McDonald

I very much enjoyed listening to this short novel. The characters are believable, the story is engaging, and the horror elements are sparingly yet dramatically incorporated.

What I found most impressive was the economy of both the prose and character development. While painting our ceiling after finishing LATER I listened to portions of the author’s book ON WRITING especially the discussion of drafts and editing. It sounds to me like King in LATER takes his own advice very seriously!

I don’t think there is an extraneous word or comma in this book. Everything is subservient to propelling the story along.

What came to my mind while reading LATER was a phrase from an old Firesign Theater album: “Not a speck of cereal!”
