Ryan Coogler's "Sinners"

Ryan Coogler's "Sinners"

Movie review by Dennis D. McDonald

I like it when a film veers in an unexpected direction and goes all out to convincingly move the story and characters in that direction. That was the case with Jordan Peele's Nope and Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk Till Dawn, and it certainly is the case with Sinners.

Nope’s story quickly veered into the tale of an alien activity that gobbles up both people and animals. Sinners careens into a musically infused vampire/zombie gorefest while displaying both overt and subtle commentary about racial discrimination.

This is an unusual film that will resonate with anyone looking for something dramatically different. It’s beautifully photographed and oozes historical period detail. Highly recommended, especially for those with a strong stomach!
