Tony Bill's FLYBOYS

By Dennis D. McDonald

I love airplane movies, but Flyboys is just plain awful. The Blue Max and the original Flight of the Phoenix -- both with strong dramatics and flying sequences --  put this current CGI-happy offering to shame.

The Flyboys' script is boring, the characters are dull, and the aerial sequences are just too video-gamey to believe.

Definitely a missed opportunity.

Blue Max??? Are you kidding me?! That gaslight tome was only interesting because Ursula Anress made her boobies jiggle.

As someone who has studied the original pilots Flyboys "takes off" on, it was a glorious reproduction of the real events that inspired it. Never have I seen a time brought back to life in a truer, more thrilling way.

Some watch films to be impressed by each other, others watch them to be entertained and to be enlightened. Not all viewers are catty insiders resentful of other's good, solid work.

As a WWI epic I recommend "A Very Long Engagement" http://www.ddmcd.com/movies/jean-pierre-jeunets-a-very-long-engagement.html . In addition to Audrey Tautou, this also includes a performance by Jodie Foster, my all-time favorite actress. (And I have nothing against Ursula Andress!)

"insiders"?
