"Best Practices" and Reality

On of my favorite blogs, Fashion Incubator, has an interesting post about "best practices" (she calls it "standard work") applied to manufacturing in the clothing and fashion industries. I've left some comments there because I see some interesting parallels to technology management.

Check it out, espcially if you have experience with what happens organizationally when you try to combine two processes that originated with two different companies or groups.

I've been meaning to explain the concept of Standard Work -also known as Best Practices- for a long time because there are tremendous advantages to adopting them. Briefly, standard work is a defined established procedure for doing something in a certain way -say, sewing in a zipper.
