Neal Bascomb's HIGHER

By Dennis D. McDonald

I’m about half way through. Right now, the initial construction of the Chrysler Building is being described, as well as all the intrigues — business and architectural — surrounding the race to build “the highest building.”

So far there has been a bit more personal backstory about the main players and rivals than I really care about. What really fascinates me is the engineering and construction project details. As a project manager I’m fascinated with what it takes to plan and construct such major edifices.

After I finish this book I’ll put it right next to these other books on my shelf of favorites:

  • “GREAT BRIDGE : The Epic Story of the Building of the Brooklyn Bridge,” by David McCullough
  • “Skyscraper: The Making of a Building,” by Karl Sabbagh
