Guillermo del Toro's "PINOCCHIO"

Guillermo del Toro's "PINOCCHIO"

Review by Dennis D. McDonald

The mix of tags I’ve given to this film is an indication of its unusual nature. The outline of the story is pretty much what we have learned to expect over the years yet this stop motion animated version incorporates some dark and scary elements that may not be understood by younger viewers even if they are fascinated by the images and by Pinocchio himself.

The film does not flinch at incorporating repeated displays of death and afterlife that will disturb some religious purists. Nevertheless, how these elements relate to the film and to the portrayed conflicts of good versus evil is intelligent and borders on the brilliant. Also, incorporating 1930s Italian fascism and militarism is a remarkably clever touch.

The voice casting is universally excellent. We even get to hear “cricket” Ewan McGregor sing the closing song!

Finally, cast aside any previous concepts you might have about what the Blue Fairy looks like!
