I am updating an article I published in 2007 called How To Develop a Business-Aligned Social Media & Social Networking Strategy. I’m seeking comments and suggestions. (The .pdf version is available for downloading here.)

The article described an approach to strategy development that is both formal and structured. It was based largely on my personal experience working with corporate CIO’s on a series of strategic planning projects where the project focus was the definition of specific initiatives to improve the alignment of corporate IT with corporate business strategy.

The article has consistently been one of the most frequently hit posts here and I’ve also received some positive feedback as well.

I’m now very interested in answers to these two questions:

1. In what situations is the formal and structured approach described in the article appropriate for planning the adoption of social media and social networking systems?
2. In what situations is the formal and structured approach described in the article NOT appropriate for planning the adoption of social media and social networking systems?
